Understanding a fishing reel's gear ratio and line retrieve is essential for choosing the right reel for your style of fishing.

Let's start with a practical example using two very similar Shimano Stella SW models:

Shimano Stella SW 18000HGC

  • Gear Ratio: 5.7:1
  • Line Retrieve: 128 cm (50.4 in) per handle turn

Shimano Stella SW 20000PGC

  • Gear Ratio: 4.4:1
  • Line Retrieve: 104 cm (40.9 in) per handle turn

Although these reels are very similar, their performance characteristics are quite different.


Line Retrieve (Line Per Handle Turn)

Line retrieve is the amount of fishing line recovered with one complete turn of the handle.

It depends on two main factors:

  • The gear ratio.
  • The actual spool diameter.

This is why two reels with the same gear ratio can retrieve different amounts of line.

Example

A 2500HG reel retrieves less line per handle turn than a 5000HG model, even if both have the same gear ratio.

The larger spool diameter of the 5000 allows it to recover more line with each rotation.

This is an important concept that is often misunderstood.

Spool Fill Matters

The amount of line on the spool also affects line retrieve.

A full spool has a larger effective diameter and therefore recovers more line per handle turn than a partially empty spool.

As line leaves the spool during a fight or long cast, retrieve speed gradually decreases.


What Is a Fishing Reel Gear Ratio?

The gear ratio indicates how many times the rotor rotates during one complete turn of the handle.

Example

A gear ratio of 5.7:1 means the rotor completes 5.7 revolutions for every full handle rotation.

This value directly affects:

  • Retrieve speed.
  • Available torque.
  • Cranking comfort under load.
  • Overall mechanical feel.

High Gear Ratios

The higher the gear ratio:

  • The faster the retrieve.
  • The less mechanical torque the reel naturally produces.

High gear reels are often preferred for techniques requiring rapid line pickup and fast lure presentation.


Low Gear Ratios

The lower the gear ratio:

  • The slower the retrieve.
  • The greater the mechanical advantage and cranking power.

Power gear models are particularly well suited for heavy lures, deep-water fishing, jigging, and fighting powerful fish.


Gear Ratio and Line Retrieve Are Not the Same Thing

This is one of the most common misconceptions among anglers.

A reel's gear ratio only indicates the internal mechanical gearing.

The actual amount of line recovered per handle turn depends on both:

  • Gear ratio.
  • Spool diameter.
  • Current spool fill level.

This is why manufacturers usually specify both the gear ratio and the line retrieve for each reel model.

When comparing reels, line retrieve often provides a more practical indication of real-world performance.

Lower gear ratios (PG)

Medium gear ratios

High gear ratios (HG)

Extra High Gear (XG)
